ST. PETERS (KTVI) – It appears red light cameras won’t be coming back in St. Peters even if the city wins a court case challenging a countywide ban of the devices.
St. Peters Mayor Len Pagano tells the St. Louis Post-Dispatch the city will keep its red light cameras turned off, no matter what happens with the pending court case.
Pagano says the board of aldermen is expected to approve a resolution next week terminating the city’s nine-year contract with Arizona-based Redflex Traffic Systems to operate the cameras. St. Peters began using red light cameras in 2006, but suspended the program last September, pending a Missouri Supreme Court ruling on the use of the cameras.
In November 2014, St. Charles County voters approved a measure banning the cameras countywide. Mayor Pagano says if the people don’t want the cameras, then that’s the way it should be, adding that the board of aldermen unanimously supports the will of the people.
However, Pagano says based on principle, the cities of St. Peters, O’Fallon, and Lake St. Louis will continue a lawsuit seeking to overturn the countywide ban, contending such a measure goes too far.
