Protesters Briefly Shut Down Hwy 40-61

TROY, MO – Saturday morning Highway 61 was briefly closed at Hwy 47. The highway was closed due to protesting outside of the nearby Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Detention Center. The protest is called the Families Belong Together Rally. The gathering is part of a nationwide protest of the immigration policies introduced by the Trump administration, including the “zero tolerance” policy introduced in April by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions. The detention center in Troy, Mo also holds migrants arrested at the border, thousands of miles away. The policy criminalizes and incarcerates undocumented adults who enter the country and separates them from their children and families. The rally is being held outside the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Detention Center at the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.
