MONROE COUNTY, Ill. – A fire at a well-known bakery in Waterloo does significant damage to a beloved business.
It all happened at Ahne’s Bakery in downtown Waterloo Sunday night. The Republic Times – a local newspaper in Monroe County, reported that flames were shooting from the back of the business when Waterloo fire crews rushed there around 7:45 p.m.
Other first responders also raced there including Waterloo Police, Monroe County EMS and the Columbia Fire Department. Fire officials told the Republic Times that they had the situation under control about a half hour after they arrived, but significant damage was already done.
No injuries were reported, as it appeared the bakery was likely closed at the time.
Local residents we spoke with Monday morning talked about how sad it was to see the Waterloo landmark damaged by fire. We understand the Waterloo Fire Department has requested help from the Illinois State Fire Marshal in investigating the fire. The Ahne Family took over the business back in 1973.
It’s been honored with awards, including being voted reader’s choice in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch go list as best bakery in St. Louis.
