St. Louis police: 149 cars stolen in one week

ST. LOUIS – The latest crime numbers in the city of St. Louis show a staggering number of cars stolen in just the last week.

St. Louis City police reported 149 cars stolen in just past week. Police told FOX 2 that the problem isn’t confined to just one neighborhood, but rather it is happening all across the city.

Lots of people who live in the city don’t have garages, so you can have streets lined with cars parked outside. Areas like that can be prime targets for criminals.

City police do have some advice on what you can do to try and keep your car from being targeted. They explained to park in a well-lit area, use a car club, and don’t leave a running car unattended like when you’re warming it up on a cold morning.

FOX 2 spoke with city locals about the alarming number of cars stolen in just the past seven days.

“I think about it every day. I just locked my car to make sure and had to double-check it didn’t get broken into during the day,” local Ryan Liberati revealed.

Resident William Dunn added, “I’d like to say it surprises me, but it doesn’t. And like you said earlier, it’s sad that that’s just the state of things right now. I drive a Kia, so that’s going to happen at some point or another.”

Those residents we spoke with are characterizing the problem of stolen cars in the city as “rampant.” One of them calling on Mayor Tishaura Jones to come up with a plan to combat the issue.
