2 dead after MetroBus shooting in Berkeley

BERKELEY, Mo. – The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis has been requested to assist in an investigation after a double shooting on a MetroBus left two people dead.

The shooting happened at 2:30 p.m. in the 8300 block of Airport Road. According to a release, witnesses told police a man fired into the bus.

The victims were taken to an area hospital, where they were both pronounced dead. Their names have not yet been released.

There appeared to be two bullet holes visible on the bus windshield. Some Berkeley residents expressed their heartache over the shooting.

“Just praying for the families of everybody involved,” said William Bayless.

Bayless is a long-time resident and also served on the Berkely Betterman Committee. He believes too many guns are in the hands of the wrong people.

“Get some of the guns off the street,” said Bayless.

Other residents nearby have their doubts.

“I’m ready to move,” said Towan Holbrook, Berkeley resident.

Bi-State Development, which operates Metro, released a statement in the aftermath of the shooting:

This afternoon shots were fired on a MetroBus that was stopped at a bus stop on Airport Road. Law enforcement immediately responded and Metro Transit is fully cooperating with investigators in this ongoing investigation. This brazen act is yet another example of the violent crime crisis we are seeing in our region. All requests for information about this crime should be directed to the investigating law enforcement officers.
