Two missing teens found safe after search near Deer Creek

WEBSTER GROVES, Mo. – Two teenage girls were found safe Tuesday afternoon after water rescue crews searched around Deer Creek in Webster Groves.

The Webster Groves Fire Chief confirms that two 15-year-old girls were found safe. They were reported missing around 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Throughout the day, rain has led to higher water levels around Deer Creek. It was believed the two girls were walking around the creek earlier before they disappeared.

Charges filed in case of intruder shot by homeowner

Authorities then responded to a report that two girls might have fallen into the creek. Rescue crews rushed to the creek within moments. And after various search efforts, the girls were found safe in the backyard of a home off of Holland Avenue.

The two girls are considered safe and being checked out by medical personnel. Authorities say, based on preliminary details, their disappearance was not connected with rising water levels at Deer Creek and it does not appear they fell into the creek.

“Today is a great day because we were able to find the two individuals that were missing,” said Webster Groves Fire Chief Brett Ellis. “They are accounted for, and they are being checked out by Webster Groves EMS, as well as our police department.”

“It’s a great day to celebrate. We deploy a lot of resources as we exist for people. And we found those people today. It was definitely a victory on the emergency front.”

Because the missing girls are minors, first responders were not able to go into any more details.

Nearby resident James Young saw dozens of first responders descending on the neighborhood.

“Seeing some of the people and talking to them over there, I was kind of heartbroken when I heard (something) might be happening, but I’m glad to hear that it came out well,” he said.

Kenneth Roberts lives nearby and has witnessed the creek water rise quickly in the past.

“Be very careful, because water can sweep you away,” he said.

Roberts added his appreciation for the first responders who arrived quickly.

“I want to thank them and appreciate their heart and effort and their hard work,” Roberts said.
