Police ID slain victim in Spanish Lake shooting

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – Homicide detectives with the St. Louis County Police Department have identified the deceased victim in a shooting during a July 4 gathering in Spanish Lake.

According to Sgt. Tracy Panus, a police spokeswoman, officers were notified of a shooting in the 1200 block of Lakeview Avenue just after 11:05 p.m. Thursday.

Police arrived to find a man, identified as D’Mon Ward, suffering from a gunshot wound. Ward was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. He was 42.

Five other adults were taken to local hospitals with gunshot wounds. Two of those adults suffered life-threatening gunshot wounds but are still alive: a 30-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man. Three people suffered injuries that were not life-threatening: a 33-year-old man, a 44-year-old man, and a 58-year-old woman.

The shooting happened during a heavily attended fireworks event, police said.

The investigation remains ongoing, Panus said.
