ST. LOUIS – Heading into the third week of classes, St. Louis Public Schools announced adjustments aimed at addressing ongoing transportation troubles.
Those adjustments include what the district calls a comprehensive re-routing, which officials say will expand ridership capacity and address challenges. The district is also working to add additional routes with its main bus vendor.
Some parents report problems have yet to be resolved.
“They need to get to school,” Vanika Bolden said. The mother of two lives in the North Pointe neighborhood and says the district has failed to provide adequate bus service for her sons.
Bolden’s youngest son is in an individualized education program at an elementary school. She says the district promised he would have bus service.
“I have yet to receive a bus for him,” Bolden said.
Her oldest son is in high school and has experienced similar problems. Bolden pays for him to take public transportation. She’s calling on the district to do more.
“Some of these parents don’t have cars to get their kids back and forth to school,” she said.
Bolden has arrived late to her job at times to make sure her sons make it to school on time.
Tiara Green lives a few blocks away. She believes the district has addressed issues her family experienced during the first two weeks of school.
Green said the district has sent multiple messages updating her on her children’s bus status. She was relieved to see their bus pick them up on time and arrive back home on time Tuesday afternoon.
“That’s always good when your kids are excited to see you, especially when they get off the bus and made it home safely,” Green said.
She said bus service had been sporadic last week.
