Intruder killed after breaking into neighboring apartment: Police

ST. LOUIS – A homicide investigation is underway after police say a resident forced their way into an upstairs apartment in north St. Louis only to be met with gunfire.

According to a spokesperson for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, the shooting happened Sunday afternoon at a four-family flat in the 4800 block of Leduc Street, in the Kingsway East neighborhood.

Crime lab officers were seen carrying four large evidence bags to their trucks. Caution tape surrounded the building, and at least four police cars were on the scene as officers spoke with residents.

Investigators said it appears the downstairs resident broke in through the back door of the upstairs residence. The upstairs resident was armed with a rifle and fatally shot the intruder.

Authorities believe it was a case of forced entry, but they are still piecing together what led up to the shooting. The shooter is in custody as the investigation continues.
