ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – Charges have been filed against a St. Louis County father after his 11-year-old son died Monday night in an accidental shooting.

According to the St. Louis County Police Department, the shooting took place shortly before 8:15 p.m. on the 1800 block of Longford Drive.

When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered the child, Marshaun Futrell Jr., outside suffering from a gunshot injury. The 11-year-old was rushed to the hospital for treatment but succumbed to his injuries.

Police said a 13-year-old who was at the home at the time of the shooting told investigators Marshaun Jr. had two firearms in a backpack and that they were handling and playing with the guns. One of the guns went off and struck Marshaun Jr.

The family said Marshaun Sr. was not home at the time of the shooting. A two-year-old child also lived in the house and was present at the time of the shooting.

Police searched the home and a vehicle parked outside and found 12 guns. Many of the firearms were loaded and unsecured, and easily accessible to children. All of the guns were owned by Marshaun Jr.’s father, Marshaun Futrell Sr.

The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Marshaun Sr. with one count of first-degree endangering the welfare of a child resulting in death and two counts of first-degree endangering the welfare of a child by creating substantial risk. He remains jailed on a $100,000 cash-only bond.

Prosecutors said additional details could emerge as the case moves forward.
