AAA predicts record-breaking travel for Fourth of July weekend

ST. LOUIS – AAA is forecasting record-setting travel for the Fourth of July weekend, with 72.2 million Americans expected to travel domestically.

AAA predicts that this holiday weekend will see more than 61 million people driving to their destinations, a 2.2% increase from last year. AAA recommends drivers do some routine maintenance and pack an emergency kit before hitting the roads.

While the majority of travelers will be on the road, more than 5.8 million people are anticipated to fly, marking a 1.4% increase over last year’s record.

In Missouri, nearly 53,000 people are expected to travel by air during the holiday period, while in Illinois, more than 150,000 are projected to take to the skies.

The AAA travel period extends from June 28th to July 6th. As of Thursday morning, FlightAware reports only six delays at Lambert airport with no cancellations. However, travelers heading to the eastern U.S. should check their flight information due to weather issues in that region.

With millions of Americans on the move, this Fourth of July weekend is set to be one of the busiest travel periods in recent history.
