FESTUS, Mo. – Five people were hospitalized following a collision along a major Festus thoroughfare that sent a car crashing into a fireworks tent.
The crash happened Thursday afternoon in the parking lot of the Walmart Supercenter along South Truman Boulevard, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
FOX 2 has learned that an 84-year-old man was behind the wheel, and police believe he accidentally stepped on the gas pedal by mistake, reversing the car into the fireworks stand, injuring five people. During this, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP), the driver also sideswiped another car and hit a barrier.
The driver also had a passenger in his vehicle, who was the man’s wife, an 83-year-old.
The identities of the victims have not been released yet, but FOX 2 has learned that three of the five victims were related. A man, 41, and his six-year-old son were trapped beneath the car that went into the tent.
According to officials, the 41-year-old male was listed in critical condition, and the hospital has also taken his wife and son for their injuries, which were considered moderate.
Officials listed the other two victims, who are adults, in moderate condition as well. Those victims have now been identified as a 47-year-old woman and a 39-year-old man. Police told FOX 2 they believe that all four victims in moderate condition are expected to survive.
The 84-year-old driver and his wife sustained no injuries.
FOX 2 has learned that Festus Police were in the process of completing a minor fender-bender for the elder driver for a prior incident he was involved in before this tragic event happened.
Officials told FOX 2 they do not believe the driver was impaired and have not charged anyone regarding the crash.
FOX 2 is actively gathering information about the incident and will provide updates when it becomes available.
