SLMPD arrests dozens, mostly teens, for illegal fireworks

Police arrested at least 50 people, most of them under 18, overnight for illegal fireworks and other disturbances.

The crackdown began around 6 p.m. near 9th and Chestnut, where officers initially took two juveniles into custody for setting off fireworks.

When the parents of the juveniles arrived to pick them up, they were cited as well.

Later in the night, several gun arrests were also made as part of the ongoing operation.

Police had been issuing warnings throughout the week, stating that dangerous fireworks activity would not be tolerated.

An exact number of arrests and further details are expected to be released later today.
